Eastern United States

The Eastern United States, the American East, or simply the "East" is traditionally defined as the states east of the Mississippi River. It contains the northern half of states that are on the Eastern Seaboard the group of states commonly called "New England". The estimated population of the eastern United States as of 2006 is about 148 million.



Notable cities in the East are New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington D.C.



Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States, situated within the District of Columbia (abbreviated as "D.C."). The city and the district are located on the banks of the Potomac River and bordered by the states of Virginia (to the west) and Maryland (to the north, east and south). The city is commonly referred to as Washington, The District, or simply D.C. In the 19th century, it was called the Federal City or Washington City.
